EN 17446:2021 Certification

EN 17446:2021 is the new European standard that defines the minimum requirements for design, installation, functionality, testing, and maintenance of fixed automatic fire suppression systems for professional kitchens.

Implementation of the new standard is mandatory for all EU member states.

The standard ensures that the fire suppression system is designed to protect not only the cooking appliances, but also the hood, the plenum chambers, and the ventilation ducts for air exhaust.

Additionally, the standard defines the criteria for construction and performance of components used in pre-engineered fire suppression systems for kitchen hoods, which are exposed to high risk of fire caused by ignition of grease and/or oil residues. Especially in ventilation ducts, the presence of fire can lead to its spread to other parts of the building and cause complete destruction.

Environmental Approach – Fluorine-Free Extinguishing Agent

We remind you that the DIAS system was recently upgraded with the new fire extinguishing agent (MBK GEM FF), which is environmentally friendly and does not contain fluorine. The new extinguishing agent is developed for fast and effective suppression of Class F fires caused by cooking fats and oils. It does not contain fluorine, complies with European environmental legislation, is biodegradable, and is non-toxic to living organisms.

New Fire Suppression Control Panel

The DIAS system is supplied with a new, certified fire suppression control panel, specifically designed for the system. The new fire suppression control panel is certified to EN54-2, EN54-4, and EN12094-1.

Fire suppression pump sets are the heart of the water supply in fire extinguishing systems. They provide sufficient water pressure and flow rate to maintain the effective operation of hydrants, sprinkler systems, deluge systems, and other water-based fire suppression installations.

Main Components of a Pump Set

1. Main Pump – Typically a centrifugal pump that provides the main flow rate and pressure of the system. It is powered by an electric motor or diesel engine.
2. Backup (Diesel) Pump – Operates in case of failure or loss of electrical power supply.
3. Pressure Maintenance Pump (Jockey Pump) – A small pump that compensates for minimal pressure losses in the system to prevent unnecessary starting of the main pump.

This agent interrupts the chemical chain reaction sustaining combustion, thereby extinguishing the fire. It is dispersed in the form of a fine mist, which not only extinguishes the flames but also cools the oil below its auto-ignition temperature.

The system can be activated automatically upon fire detection or manually via a remote manual station located at the exit of the hazardous area. Electrical or mechanical activation

• A) LHDC (Linear Heat Detection Cable) and electrical control panel

Both activation methods are shown below. The first method uses a linear heat detection cable and electrical control panel. When the linear heat detection cable detects a fire, it generates a signal to the control panel, which in turn activates the fire extinguisher. The fire extinguishing agent is released through the distribution outlet, piping system, and nozzles to the fire. Simultaneously, audio-visual alarms are activated, as well as a gas shut-off valve to ensure additional safety measures.

The second method involves fusible metal detectors and metal cable connected to a mechanical control panel. This system also initiates the fire suppression process when heat causes the fusible element or metal cable to melt, activating the release of the fire extinguishing agent.

The second method shows activation via fusible metal detectors. In automatic operation, the fusible metal detectors, which are heat-sensitive and placed in the hood, melt and disintegrate due to temperature increase, activating the system. In manual control, the system must be activated by pulling the manual activation handle at the activation station. Once the system is activated, the fire extinguishing agent in the cylinders is dispersed over the cooking appliances, in the plenum and air duct through the nozzles, thereby extinguishing the ignited oils.
